The Mont Blanc Tunnel (French Tunnel du Mont-Blanc, Italian Traforo del Monte Bianco) connects Italy with France. The length of the Mont Blanc tunnel is 11,611 m. It is located between the Italian city of Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley and the French Chamonix-Mont-Blanc under the highest alpine peak – Mount Mont Blanc.

This is the second deepest tunnel after the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland. It passes over the top of the Aiguille du Midi. There is another 2,480 meters of rock above the passing cars. An observation deck with a glass floor and walls above a rocky cliff was built on the Aiguille du Midi mountain – the view of the mountains is magnificent.

15 km to the east is the border with Switzerland. The road has two lanes for cars – one in each direction. A third of all cargo from Italy to Northern Europe passes through the tunnel. An alternative road to France passes through another tunnel – Frejus.

Travel through   the Mont Blanc tunnel  is not free, but requires payment of   a toll   , which is calculated based on   the vehicle’s classification   . There are various forms of fares (one way, round trip, season ticket, flat rate) with tariffs regulated by an international agreement between Italy and France, established and revised on   1 January of each year   by an intergovernmental commission. It is curious that the amount is not the same in the two countries:   tariffs for the Mont Blanc tunnel   are slightly   lower in France   , because in the country beyond the Alps VAT is 20%, and in Italy it is 22%.

Discount on repeat travel (return ticket):  a return ticket with a 75% discount on return is valid for 7 days from the date of issue. The discount applies to motorcycles and cars. You must return before 23:59 on the seventh day after the date of issue. For example, you take round-trip tickets on Monday at any time. This means the 75% discount will be valid until 11:59 pm next Monday. The 10/20 trip pass is valid for 24 months from the date of purchase.

Where to buy a 10/20 trip pass:  This is unlikely to be relevant for travelers, but locals often use it. You can purchase it while transiting through the tunnel at the checkpoint. Or in a paid parking lot at either end of the tunnel.

Periodic evolution of Mont Blanc tunnel tariffs.  Tariffs for transit through the Mont Blanc tunnel are regulated by an international agreement between Italy and France and are set and reviewed on January 1 of each year by the Intergovernmental Commission. The annual evolution is carried out by applying to existing tariffs an update percentage equal to the average rate of inflation recorded in the two countries in the previous year, in addition to any emergency additions approved by the governments.

Single tax base, two different rates Mont Blanc tunnel.  For the same class and transit ticket, the rates charged on the Italian and French sides (including VAT/TVA) differ from each other due to the different tax rates applied in the respective national territories. : VAT 22% on the Italian side and TVA 20% on the French side.

How to pay for the Mont Blanc tunnel –   Tolls can be paid not only in cash (euro), but also with cards from major banking systems (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Bancomat, Moneta), smartphones and smart watches (Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay) , with oil or service cards (DKV, EUROTRAFIC, GR, EUROSHELL, RESSA, ROUTEX, UTA) or, for heavy vehicles, with post-invoice subscriptions (compatible Mont Blanc-Frejus card).
Telepass use is not permitted.

From the Italian side: Courmayeur – 5 km, Aosta – 42 km, Turin – 151 km, Milan – 224 km, Rome – 760 km.

From the French side: Chamonix – 5 km, Annecy – 102 km, Geneva – 87 km, Lyon – 222 km, Macon – 229 km, Paris – 620 km.

Traffic rules and safety rules in the Mont Blanc tunnel

  • Maximum speed – 70 km/h.
  • Minimum speed – 50 km/h.
  • The minimum distance when driving is at least 150 m to the person in front. In the tunnel, there are blue lights on the walls every 150 meters. Focus on them.
  • The minimum distance when stopping is at least 100 m.
  • Overtaking is prohibited.
  • Stopping in the tunnel without a compelling reason is prohibited. When stopped, the evacuation plan is launched and traffic in the tunnel stops. In case of serious damage, towing is free. If it turns out to be not a breakdown, but running out of fuel, you will be charged a fine of 300 € for negligence.
  • In the tunnel, you need to tune the radio to the service frequency: 103.3 MHz or 107.7 MHz. There are 20 base frequencies in total.
  • If the car runs partially or completely on gas, you must inform the tunnel staff. You will be given a tag on your windshield. There is no separate charge for gas.
  • Driving with snow chains in the tunnel is prohibited.

In Italy (outside the tunnel), it is mandatory to use snow chains or winter tires from October 15 to April 15.

  • Stop
  • Read the information on the board and follow the instructions. 
  • Listen to the radio and follow the instructions

In case of breakdown, accident and forced stop in the Mont Blanc tunnel

  • Use the parking spaces on the right (pockets), located every 600 meters. There are a total of 36 pockets in each direction, 30 meters long and 3 wide. If you can’t, back up or push the car to the curb.
  • Turn off the engine and turn on the hazard lights.
  • If possible, notify the command and control point via the SOS niche. They are located every 100 m, 116 in total. Each SOS niche contains 1 intercom and 2 fire extinguishers. These niches are not designed to provide protection from smoke and fire.

In case of fire in the Mont Blanc tunnel

  • Stop immediately.
  • Turn off the engine and turn on the hazard lights.
  • Run to cover. It is green in color and illuminated with flashing lights.
  • If possible, notify the command and control panel through SOS niches located every 100 m.
  • If possible, use fire extinguishers located inside the same SOS niches located every 100 m.
  • If possible, help those in need.

The Mont Blanc tunnel is equipped with 37 safe places. They are located every 300 meters. All safe places are connected to the evacuation route, which runs under the roadway.
