The stamp cannot be purchased earlier than 30 days after its validity. Do not drive on Romanian toll roads until you receive confirmation of the vignette via SMS or email.

In Romania, there is a points system for traffic violations. Each item is 10% of the minimum wage set by the Romanian government. Fines are divided into five different classes:

  • First class – 2-3 points
  • II class – from 4 to 5 points
  • III class – 6-8 points
  • IV class – from 9 to 20 points
  • V class – from 20 to 100 points

Points and fines also apply to foreigners. Some traffic violations are considered criminal offenses and can also result in suspension of your license, impoundment of your vehicle and possible imprisonment.

Tires

Since 2011, the use of winter tires is mandatory in Romania from November 1 to March 31. The minimum tread depth is 2 mm.

In addition to winter tires, trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons and cars with more than 9 seats must be equipped with anti-skid chains. The use of studded tires is prohibited on vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons.

Failure to use winter tires is punishable by a fine from 504 euros to 806 euros.

Children in the car

Children under 12 years of age and less than 150 cm tall cannot travel in the front passenger seat and must sit in a child seat or booster seat. Children under the age of 3 must also have a seat that is appropriate for their weight and age.

Alcohol while driving

Romania has zero tolerance for blood alcohol. Driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or psychoactive substances is punishable by imprisonment for a term of one to five years or a fine.

  • Up to 0.4‰ alcohol in the blood – from 613 euros to 1,461 euros and deprivation of a driver’s license for 3 months
  • More than 0.4‰ alcohol in the blood: imprisonment from 1 to 5 years or a large fine.

Low beam headlights are used for driving at night and during the day. Therefore, do not use daytime running lights during the day.
