Every year, cargo theft causes serious losses to companies involved in the transportation of goods, with losses estimated at more than $15 billion annually and growing. Modern technologies and anti-theft devices available in the market help companies maintain the integrity of transit cargo. Cargo theft protection and cargo sealing were once an afterthought, but are now an integral part of running a trucking business .
Why seal the cargo?
Mechanical seals are available in two different forms – orientation and barrier. Made from plastic or thin metal strips, indicator seals change shape or composition when opened. The simplest option for indicator seals is inexpensive, usually costing less than 20 cents apiece. Bolt and cable versions are manufactured in various diameters. Generally, the thicker the diameter, the stronger the connection. The seal is installed according to ISO/PAS 17712 standards.
Why do you need to seal the cargo:
- Increased security.
The seal has an additional security feature to prevent theft and tampering of trucks, rail cars and containers. Consists of a lock body that is resistant to drilling and corrosion. It can only be removed using professional grade cable cutters. One of the safest suggestions is a barrier seal called a stud. Unlike most devices, this seal cannot be removed with a bolt cutter.
- Detection technology.
While mechanical options continue to provide an effective barrier against theft, electronic seals are the way of the future. Electronic models have the same physical strength as mechanical seals, but they have a tracking chip built into them. With this technology, the device is attached to a vehicle trailer or container, tracking the location of the cargo through a global GPS system.
- Honesty guaranteed.
Sealing cargo makes it possible to control the integrity of the logistics company. Even the strongest seals and advanced detection technologies cannot completely protect cargo from risks.
Rules for sealing cargo
All shipments are potentially at risk, but to assess what level of security should be used, companies must consider the type of goods being transported. Cargo sealing is carried out in the following order:
- Consolidation.
Port and customs authorities insist on the presence of at least one seal – provided that it is secured in the appropriate hole. Securing is carried out at the time of transfer of cargo to the logistics company, after it is packaged. - Withdrawal.
A post-mortem examination is being carried out. If there are any defects, the customer must notify the shipper and insurance. In this case, the container will be opened only in the presence of representatives of these parties. The seal number must match what is indicated on the bill of lading.
