The first compact crossover Volkswagen was presented to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007. The sonorous name Tiguan, formed from a combination of the words tiger (tiger) and iguana (iguana), was chosen as a result of a public vote that fueled interest in the model even before its appearance. Built on the Volkswagen Golf platform, the car received a very harmonious and attractive athletic appearance: a long hood line, straight A-pillars and wide wheel arches.

Traditionally for a German manufacturer, the interior of the Tiguan is distinguished by a strict design, the quality of the materials used and assembly, as well as a high level of ergonomics. A comfortable steering wheel and clear instruments with bright blue backlighting, a climate control system control unit, a touch-screen entertainment and navigation center, as well as power window buttons and a remote control for electric mirrors located on the extension of the parabolic door handle – everything is aimed at ensuring that make driving as comfortable and convenient as possible.
The infotainment system combines the functions of a music center and a navigation system. The active Touchscreen is used to control the system. Terrain maps and multimedia files are stored on a 30 gigabyte hard drive. There is a slot for SD memory cards through which you can download MP3 files. The innovative function of the navigation system comes in handy when driving in off-road conditions and in terrain for which there are no electronic maps. The device can store up to 500 intermediate waypoints along the route, so you can always find your way back. As additional equipment, you can order options such as a rear-view camera and the Park Assist system, which itself determines the place of possible parking and controls the rotation of the steering wheel.

The rear seat has a 16 cm fore-and-aft adjustment and an angle-adjustable backrest to improve passenger comfort or increase usable luggage space. In addition, the rear seat can be folded in parts in a ratio of 40:60, and in some modifications a folding front passenger seat is standard equipment, making it easy to adapt the interior to carry long items.

Tiguan is the first SUV in the world to be equipped with only turbocharged engines: 1.4L (150PS) and 2.0L (170PS and 200PS, depending on the from settings), as well as a 2.0-liter TDI turbodiesel (140 hp or 170 hp, depending on settings). All power units are equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, and two-liter gasoline and diesel engines can also be equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions.

Volkswagen Tiguan is available in three trim levels: Trend&Fun, Sport&Style, Truck&Field. The first two configurations differ from the third form of the front overhang. The road version of the car is designed for operation in a metropolis and has limited off-road capabilities, the maximum angle of entry is limited to 18 degrees, while the off-road version of the Track&Field can conquer slopes at an angle of up to 28 degrees. In addition, Track&Field has a reliable crankcase protection and allows the driver to turn on a special Offroad mode with modified damper settings, electronic differential locks and special assistance modes when descending a mountain or, conversely, when starting uphill. Sport&Style, thanks to suspension and damper settings, is focused on sporty driving.

The vehicle is equipped with a fourth-generation Haldex clutch in the rear wheel drive. The peculiarity of the settings is that at the start the clutch is always closed, and then it “dissolves”. In normal mode, 90% of the torque goes to the front wheels, but if they lose traction, all the traction can go to the rear. The EDS system simulates a differential lock. Offroad mode is activated at the push of a button, activating a range of auxiliary electronic systems. Hill Descent Assist automatically controls speed when driving downhill. The hill assist modifies the characteristics of the engine management system and prevents clutch wear. Changing the accelerator mode allows for more precise torque control, and the ABS system is also optimized for off-road driving.
The basic equipment of the car includes front airbags, side airbags to protect the head and body, front belts with pretensioners and force limiters, a signaling device for unfastened front seat belts, and ISOFIX mounts on the rear side seats. After a series of crash tests, the European organization Euro NCAP awarded the Tiguan five stars for passenger protection and, based on the sum of the ratings, allowed the model to take a leading position in safety in the compact crossover class.
Since October 2009, the Tiguan compact crossover has been produced at the Russian plant in Kaluga according to the full production cycle.

In 2011, an updated version of the Tiguan was shown at the Geneva Motor Show. In the appearance of the car, only the headlights have changed – they have a fashionable LED edging. Of the changes invisible at first glance – the emergence of various electronic systems, such as: tracking road markings Lane Assist, driver fatigue recognition, electronic imitation of XDS cross-axle differential lock. Some changes affected power units – by changing the electronic settings in existing engines, it was possible to increase power, environmental friendliness and efficiency. As before, the model is offered in both “road” and “off-road” versions, which differ in the shape of the front overhangs. In addition, now a modification with an extended wheelbase Tiguan Plus has become available to customers,

If the remote control or central locking fails, the doors and trunk can be opened / locked (and some of them unlocked) manually.
Note
It is not possible to close the panoramic sliding sunroof in an emergency using available means. If necessary, call technical assistance.

ATTENTION
When the car is locked from the outside, the doors and windows cannot be opened from the inside. Before locking the vehicle with the key from the outside, ask all passengers to leave the vehicle.
It is dangerous to be within the range of the doors: this can lead to injury. Doors should only be opened and closed when no one is in the area.

Manual locking usually locks all doors at once. Manual unlocking only unlocks the driver’s door. Follow the instructions for burglar alarms.
Insert the edge of the car key into the hole in the plug indicated by the arrow in the figure.
Turn the key to unlock the plug.
Pull the door handle (1) and remove the plug (2).
Insert the key into the lock face and unlock or lock the door.
Note
Special feature when unlocking:
• The burglar alarm remains active after unlocking, but no alarm is triggered yet.
• Open the driver’s door – an alarm is triggered.
• Turn on the ignition. When the ignition is turned on, the electronic immobilizer recognizes a suitable key and turns off the security alarm.
• When locking the car with the key, the alarm does not turn on.
LOCKING THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR AND REAR DOORS MANUALLY

Open the door.
Remove the rubber plug from the end of the door. There is a lock mark on the cap.
Insert the car key into the vertical slot and turn it outward.

Make sure the door is locked. Do the same for the rest of the doors.
Urgently check the car at a service station.

2. Adapter for loosening wheel bolts. Volkswagen recommends that you always carry an adapter for the security bolts with your on-board tool. At the end of the adapter, the code number of the wheel lock bolts is stamped. In case of loss, you can buy a new adapter using this code. Write down the wheel bolt code and keep it in a safe place outside the vehicle. 

3. Threaded towing eye. 

4. Wire stripper for wheel covers and wheel bolt caps. 

5. Jack. Before removing the jack, bring it to the transport position (fold it completely). After that, install the handle close to the jack.

Damaged wheel chocks must not be used!

Place the cap on the rim so that the corresponding hole is on the tire valve. When putting on, check that the cap is securely fixed on the disc around the entire circumference.

WHEEL BOLT CAPS

  1. Take a wire puller from the on-board tool kit.
  2. Insert a wire puller into the opening of the cap and remove the cap in the direction of the arrow.
  3. The caps are used to protect the wheel bolts. After changing the wheel, they must be put back on.
  4. A special cap is provided for the security bolt, which is not suitable for ordinary bolts.
    WHEEL REPLACEMENT
    The jack and wheelbrace are not included with some models and versions. In this case, have the wheel replaced at a service station.
    It is only allowed to change the wheels yourself if the car is parked in a safe place and the person performing the work has the necessary skills and tools. Otherwise, contact a service station for help.
    WARNING
  • Changing a wheel, especially on the side of the road, can be dangerous.
  • Park your vehicle on a level, firm surface away from traffic. If necessary, turn on the hazard warning lights and install a warning triangle.
  • Change a wheel using suitable tools.
  • Change the wheel yourself only if you have the necessary skills. Otherwise, contact a service station for help.
  • After changing a wheel, check the tightness of the wheel bolts at your nearest workshop.
    PREPARING TO CHANGE A WHEEL
  1. In the event of a tire puncture, stop on a level surface at a safe distance from traffic.
  2. Apply the electromechanical parking brake.
  3. Automatic gearbox: move the selector lever to position P.
  4. Turn off the engine and remove the ignition key.
  5. Manual gearbox: shift into gear.
  6. Ask all passengers to leave and take them outside the danger zone (for example, behind the highway fence).
  7. Block the diagonally opposite wheel with foldable wheel chocks or other suitable items.
  8. If you have a trailer: uncouple the trailer and make sure it is not a hazard or obstruction.
  9. If there is cargo in the luggage compartment: remove the cargo.
  10. Remove the docking wheel and on-board tool from the luggage compartment.
  11. Remove the wheel cover.
    WARNING
    It is important for your own safety that you follow the recommended sequence of steps when preparing to change a wheel. Failure to do so may result in an accident and injury.
    WHEEL BOLTS
    Use only the original wheelbrace to loosen the wheel bolts.
    Loosen the wheel bolts approximately one turn before lifting the vehicle.
    If the bolt does not release, turn the wheel wrench by gently pressing the end of the wrench with your foot. At the same time, hold on to the car so as not to fall.
    LOOSE WHEEL BOLTS

Push the wheelbrace onto the bolt as far as it will go.
Grasp the end of the wheel wrench and loosen the bolt counterclockwise about one turn.
LOOSENING THE SECURITY BOLT

1. Remove the security bolt adapter from the on-board tool kit.

2. Push the adapter onto the security bolt until it stops.

3. Push the wheelbrace onto the adapter as far as it will go.

4. Grasp the end of the wheelbrace and loosen the bolt counterclockwise by about one turn.

Note
Important information about wheel bolts:
Wheel rims and wheel bolts are designed to match. Therefore, when installing other discs, use the appropriate wheel bolts – the correct length and with the correct thrust surface shape. The reliability of fastening the wheels and the operation of the brake system depend on this.
It happens that you cannot use wheel bolts even from a car of the same model.
The prescribed tightening torque for wheel bolts for steel and light alloy wheels is 140 Nm for front wheel drive vehicles and 120 Nm for all wheel drive vehicles (4MOTION). 4WD vehicles can be recognized by the “4MOTION” lettering on the shift lever/selector lever. After changing a wheel, have the wheel bolt torque checked immediately by a specialist workshop.Before checking the torque, replace rusty and tight wheel bolts and clean the threads in the hub holes.

WARNING
Incorrect and loose wheel bolts can impair wheel alignment and brake performance. This can lead to an accident and serious injury.
Use only the wheel bolts originally supplied with the rims.
Do not use different types of wheel bolts.
Wheel bolts and hub threads must be free of dirt and grease. The wheel bolts must be easily screwed into the threaded holes in the hubs.
Do not lubricate the wheel bolts and threaded holes in the hubs. In this case, while driving, the wheel may loosen despite the correct tightening torque.
Tightening the wheel bolts too loose will cause them to loosen while driving. Overtightening may cause thread stripping.

JACKING UP THE CAR

LOCATIONS FOR JACKINGIt is possible to install a jack under the car only at points specially designed for this purpose (marks on the body). For jacking, a place is selected located next to the wheel being replaced.

ATTENTION
It is only allowed to raise the car by the jacking points.

INSTALLING A JACK TO REPLACE THE REAR LEFT WHEEL

1. Place the vehicle on a suitable surface for jacking up

.2. Turn off the engine, engage a gear or move the selector lever to position P and apply the electromechanical parking brake.

3. Block the diagonally opposite wheel with foldable wheel chocks or other suitable items.

4. If you have a trailer: uncouple the trailer and make sure it does not pose a threat or obstruction.

5. Loosen the bolts of the wheel to be replaced.

6. Find the jacking point closest to the wheel to be changed on the bottom of the car.

7. Raise the jack until it fits almost without play under the jacking point.

8. Check that the jack rests on the ground with the entire heel.

9. Level the jack and raise its grip even higher until it grips the rib on the bottom.

10. Continue to raise the jack until the wheel is clear of the ground.

CAUTION
An unsuitable jacking base and improper lifting can cause the vehicle to slip off the jack or cause an accident.
Do not position yourself under the vehicle (do not place your arm, leg, etc.) if it is only jacked up.
Support the vehicle with suitable stands for underbody work.
The base on which the vehicle stands must be level and firm. If necessary, use a wide pad under the jack.
On slippery surfaces (such as tiles), use an anti-slip pad (such as a rubber mat).
Bring the jack only under the indicated places. The grip of the jack should wrap around the edge of the sill.
Only use jacks that Volkswagen recommends for your vehicle. Other jacks, including those recommended for other models, may slip out from under the vehicle’s sill.
Never lift a vehicle that is leaning on its side.
It is strictly forbidden to start the engine of a raised car! Engine vibration can cause the vehicle to fall off the jack.

UNSCREWING WHEEL BOLTS WITH A SCREWDRIVER HANDLE

Removing the wheel

1. Completely unscrew the loose wheel bolts with the Allen key in the screwdriver handle and place them on a clean surface.

2. Remove the wheel.Installing the tire wheel

1. Install a spare or surplus wheel.

2. Start all wheel bolts with the Allen key in the screwdriver handle and lightly tighten them.Note
If there are security bolts, use an adapter.

3. Lower the car.

4. Tighten the bolts securely with the wheel wrench. Tighten the bolts not in a circle, but in a diagonal sequence.

5. Put on the caps, hub cap or wheel cap.

Note
Have the wheel bolt torques checked by a workshop as soon as possible with a torque wrench: they should be 120 Nm for steel and light alloy wheels.
If, when replacing a wheel, it was found that the wheel bolts are corroded and have a tight ride, they should be replaced before checking the tightening torque, and the threaded holes of the hub should also be cleaned.

Have the defective wheel repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

WARNING
Improper tightening of wheel bolts and defective wheel bolts can cause an accident.
When changing a wheel, make sure that the wheel bolts and their threaded holes are clean. The wheel bolts should be relatively easy to screw in.
Never lubricate the wheel bolts and the threaded holes in the hubs, otherwise the wheel bolts, even if tightened to the correct torque, may come loose while driving.
Use the hex key in the screwdriver handle only to loosen or start wheel bolts, not to loosen or tighten them.

AFTER CHANGING A WHEELLay the removed wheel in the niche of the luggage compartment and secure it with the wing nut.If necessary, clean the on-board tool and place it back in the foam mold in the luggage compartment.Check the tightness of the wheel bolts as soon as possible with a torque wrench: it should be 120 Nm for steel and light alloy wheels.Repair or replace the defective wheel as soon as possible.If, when replacing a wheel, it was found that the wheel bolts were corroded and are hard to unscrew or screw in, they should be replaced before checking the tightening torque, and the threaded holes of the hub should also be cleaned.

ATTENTION
Make sure that the spare, idle or removed wheel are securely fastened in the luggage compartment. Note
On vehicles with a tire pressure warning light or a tire pressure monitoring system, the system must be reset after a wheel has been replaced.

Tire repair kit (Tire Mobility kit) allows you to securely seal small, up to 4 mm in diameter, punctures. A foreign body (nail, screw or other) must not be removed from the tire!
ATTENTION
Be sure to check the pressure in the sealed tire again after a 10-minute drive!

Sealant should not be used in the following cases:
• If the disc is damaged.
• At outside temperatures below -20°C.
• For punctures larger than 4 mm in diameter.
• After driving with a very flat tire.
• If sealant has expired.
WARNING
Working with the tire repair kit, especially on the side of the road, can be dangerous.
• Park your vehicle on a level, firm surface away from traffic.
• The purpose of the tire repair kit is only to enable the driver to get to the nearest service station.
• A tire sealed with the sealant from the kit must be replaced immediately.
• Sealant is harmful to health. In case of contact with skin, wash it off immediately!
• Keep the tire repair kit out of the reach of children.
A tire repaired with a sealant cannot provide the vehicle’s previous driving characteristics.
• The speed must not exceed 80 km/h.
• Avoid fast acceleration, hard braking and fast cornering.
• After 10 minutes of driving, check the tire again.
Dispose of used or expired sealant properly.

A new sealant bottle can be purchased from Volkswagen dealers.
Follow the operating instructions issued by the manufacturer of the tire repair kit.CONTENTS OF THE TIRE REPAIR KIT

Tire repair kit:
1. Spindle removal tool. 2. Sticker with the inscription “max. 80 km/h” or “max. 50 mph. 3. Hose with screw plug. 4. Compressor. 5. Hose for tire inflation. 6. Pressure gauge. 7. Screw plug for air release. 8. Switch. 9. 12V cable plug. 10. Container with sealant. 11. Spare spool.
The lower end of the spool extractor (1) has a slot for the spool. With this device, the spool is unscrewed from the wheel valve and screwed back. The tool also fits the spare spool (11).
Check the expiration date of the sealant. After the expiration date, the sealant must not be used. A new container of sealant can be purchased from a Volkswagen dealer.
Dispose of the sealant container properly.
Note
When using the tire repair kit, also follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
PREPARATION1. In the event of a tire puncture, stop on a level surface as far away from traffic as possible.
2. Turn off the engine and engage a gear or move the selector lever to position P.
3. Apply the electromechanical parking brake.
4. Ask all passengers to leave and take them outside the danger zone (for example, behind the highway fence).
5. If necessary, turn on the hazard warning lights and set the warning triangle. Follow the rules of the host country.
6. Check if the tire can be repaired with a special kit.
7. Remove the tire repair kit from the luggage compartment.
8. Take the sticker from the kit and stick it on the front panel in front of the driver.
9. Do not remove the foreign body (such as a screw or nail) from the tire.
10. Remove the spool from the tire valve.
11. Using the spool removal tool provided, unscrew the spool and place it on a clean surface.
12. Shake the contents of the sealant bottle.TIRE SEALING1. Shake the sealant bottle vigorously several times.
2. Screw the hose tightly onto the cylinder. The hose pushes through the sealing foil.
3. Remove the plug from the hose and put the free end on the tire valve.
4. Holding the can upside down, pour all of the sealant into the tire.
5. Disconnect the empty bottle from the valve.
6. Using the tool, screw the spool back into the valve.TIRE INFLATION1. Screw the compressor hose tightly onto the tire valve.
2. Check that the air bleed plug is tight.
3. Start the engine and let it run.
4. Insert the plug into a 12V socket.
5. Turn on the compressor with the switch.
6. Inflate the tire to 2.0-2.5 bar.
ATTENTION
The maximum allowable time of continuous operation of the compressor: 8 minutes.

7. Turn off the compressor.
8. If it is not possible to inflate the tire to 2.0-2.5 bar, unscrew the hose from the tire valve.
9. Move the vehicle 10 meters forward or backward to spread the sealant over the tire.
10. Screw the compressor hose onto the valve again and repeat the inflation operation.
11. If it was not possible to inflate the tire to the required pressure, then the puncture is too large. You cannot seal a tire with a tire repair kit. Stay where you are and contact the service center for help.
12. Disconnect the compressor and unscrew its hose from the valve.
13. If you managed to inflate the tire to 2.0-2.5 bar, immediately move on, not exceeding the speed of 80 km / h.
Note
Check the pressure again after 10 minutes.

CAUTION
When inflating a tire, the compressor and hose may become hot.

14. Keep hands and skin away from hot parts.
15. Do not place a hot compressor and its hose on combustible materials.
16. If the tire is not inflated to at least 2.0 bar, then the puncture is too large. Sealant is not able to seal such a tire. Stay where you are and contact a service station for help.
Note
To avoid overheating of the compressor, do not leave it switched on for more than 8 minutes! Allow the compressor to cool down for a few minutes before restarting.
CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE AFTER TEN MINUTES OF DRIVING.Connect the hose (5) and read the pressure on the pressure gauge (6).IF AFTER TEN MINUTES OF DRIVING THE PRESSURE IS BELOW 1.3 BARDon’t move on. It was not possible to make the tire tight again. Call for help.IF AFTER TEN MINUTES OF DRIVING THE PRESSURE IS ABOVE 1.3 BARAdjust the tire pressure to the nominal pressure (see the sticker on the fuel filler cap).
Disconnect the compressor and unscrew the hose from the tire valve.
Stow the tire repair kit back in the luggage compartment.
Drive to the nearest tire repair shop at speeds up to 80 km/h.
Have the damaged tire repaired or replaced at a service station.
Note
The tire repair kit is only intended to enable you to reach the nearest specialist workshop in the event of a tire failure. Repair or replace the damaged tire. Read and follow the operating instructions supplied with the tire repair kit.
Do not remove a foreign body (such as a screw or nail) from the tire.
The tire repair kit can be used at temperatures down to -20°C.
Check the expiration date of the sealant. Replace the sealant after the expiration date or after using the tire repair kit. A container of sealant can be purchased from a Volkswagen dealer.

CAUTION
In the event of a tire puncture, stop the vehicle as far away from the road as possible. If necessary, turn on the hazard warning lights and set up a warning sign as required by the traffic regulations.
Tire cuts and punctures larger than 4 mm in diameter, tire damage due to driving with too low tire pressure or completely flat tires, wheel rim damage represent a significant risk – risk of an accident! Stay where you are and look for help.
When inflating tires, the compressor and hose may become hot.
If, after inflating the tire, the air pressure has not risen to at least 2.0 bar, you cannot move further – look for help.
If, after ten minutes of driving, the tire pressure drops below 1.3 bar, you can no longer drive – you should contact the nearest tire repair shop.
Do not drive faster than 80 km/h with a tire sealed in this way – risk of accident!
Avoid fast acceleration, hard braking and high-speed cornering.
Make sure that the sealant does not get on the skin or in the eyes – this is dangerous!
Keep sealant out of reach of children!
Switch off the compressor no later than after eight minutes of operation – otherwise there is a risk of overheating!

Starting the engine from an external power source VW Volkswagen Tiguan

If the battery is dead and the engine does not start, it can be started from another vehicle’s battery. Before such a start, check the battery charge indicator.
An auxiliary cable according to DIN 72553 is required for start-up (see manufacturer’s data). The cross section of the auxiliary cable for starting a gasoline engine must be at least 25 mm2, for starting a diesel engine – at least 35 mm2.
If the battery is not located in the engine compartment, the auxiliary cables may only be connected to the specially provided terminals in the engine compartment!
ATTENTION
Mismanagement of auxiliary cables and incorrect operation when starting from the battery of another vehicle can cause the battery to explode and cause serious injury.
• The supply battery must be rated for approximately the same voltage and capacity (see marking on the battery) as the discharged battery.
• Do not attempt to charge a frozen or thawed battery. A discharged battery can freeze even at temperatures around 0°C.
• A frozen or thawed battery must be replaced.
• When starting the engine from the battery of another car, an explosive mixture of gases is released, so take care of good ventilation around.
• Keep auxiliary cables away from rotating parts in the engine compartment.
• Follow the instructions given in the instruction manual provided by the cable manufacturer.

CAUTION
Incorrect connection of the auxiliary cables can cause a short circuit and serious damage to the electrical equipment.
THE PROCEDURE FOR STARTING THE ENGINE FROM THE BATTERY OF ANOTHER CAR

A discharged battery must be properly connected to the on-board network.
Cars must not touch each other. Otherwise, current may already flow when the positive terminals are connected.
There must be good contact between conductive elements.
If the engine does not start within 10 seconds, turn off the starter and try again in about a minute.
Strictly follow the specified order.
CONNECTING AUXILIARY CABLES1. Turn off the ignition on both vehicles.
2. Open the battery cover and remove the cap from the positive terminal.
3. Connect one end of the red auxiliary cable to the positive (+) terminal on the vehicle with the dead battery (A).
4. Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal (“+”) of the supply battery (B).
5. On vehicles without start-stop mode: connect one end of the black cable to the negative terminal (“-“) of the supply battery.
6. On vehicles with start-stop mode: connect one end of the black auxiliary cable (“x”) to a suitable ground (to the cylinder block or to a solid metal part firmly screwed to it).
7. Connect the other end of the black auxiliary cable (“x”) to a suitable “ground” (cylinder block or all-metal part screwed to the crankcase (but not near the battery) – on a car with a discharged battery).
8. Route the auxiliary cables so that they do not touch the rotating parts in the engine compartment.ENGINE START1. Start the engine of the donor vehicle and let it idle.
2. Start the engine on the vehicle with the dead battery and wait (two to three minutes) until the engine runs “smoothly”.DISCONNECTING AUXILIARY CABLES1. Before disconnecting the auxiliary cables, turn off the dipped beam (if it was on).
2. Turn on the heater fan and heated rear window on the car with the battery discharged, this will allow you to extinguish the power surge when the cables are disconnected.
3. Disconnect the auxiliary cables with the engines running, strictly in reverse order.
4. Cover the positive terminal with a cap and close the battery cover.
CAUTION
Incorrect operation when starting from another vehicle’s battery can result in a battery explosion and serious injury.
• Connect the cables in the correct sequence: positive cable first, then negative cable.
• Never connect the negative cable to parts of the power system or brake lines.
• Avoid touching bare terminals. The cable connected to the positive terminal of the battery must not touch the conductive parts of the vehicle.
• Check the battery eye. If it is pale yellow or colorless, you cannot start from an external power source. Call for help.
• Protect the battery from electrostatic discharge. The battery emits explosive gas which can be ignited by a spark.
• Do not start from an external power source with a damaged, frozen or thawed battery.
• Do not lean over the battery.

CHECKING THE HEALTH OF OUTDOOR LIGHTING LAMPS

The warning light comes on when one of the vehicle’s exterior lighting bulbs (for example, the left high beam bulb) fails. Additionally, a message may appear on the display of the instrument cluster, informing or calling for certain actions.There is no warning about the failure of the LED in one of the rear lights. However, if all the LEDs fail, the warning lamp lights up.

CHECKING THE HEALTH OF THE LAMPS ON THE TRAILER

If the cable from the trailer is correctly connected to the vehicle with the standard trailer tow hitch, then certain bulbs on the trailer are also controlled.When the trailer is properly coupled, the trailer’s lighting equipment is continuously monitored for proper operation. The warning light in the instrument cluster comes on when one of the bulbs in the trailer’s rear lights fails. Additionally, a message may appear on the display of the instrument cluster, informing or calling for certain actions.Failure of the turn signal lamp on the trailer is indicated by rapid flashing of the turn signal lamp in the instrument cluster. Additionally, a message may appear on the display of the instrument cluster, informing or calling for certain actions.When checking the serviceability of the incandescent lamps on the trailer, the signal lamp lights up:• If the lamps of all direction indicators on one side are defective.• If the tail light on one side fails (on some models also if the license plate light fails).• If both brake signals fail.Not controlled by fog lamps and reversing lamps on the trailer, as not all trailers have such lamps. If there are several incandescent lamps on one side of the trailer, then, if one lamp fails, there is no signal.

WARNING
In order to prevent damage to the vehicle, the warning lamps and the corresponding text messages and instructions must always be observed.

LAMP REPLACEMENTGENERAL ACTIONS

1. Park the vehicle in a suitable place and secure against rolling.

2. Turn the light switch to the “O” position.

3. Move the turn signal stalk to neutral position.

4. Remove the key from the ignition switch.

5. Wait for the ambient light to turn off.

6. Let burnt out bulbs cool down.

7. Inspect the appropriate fuse for blown fuse.

8. Replace burned out bulbs following the instructions in the manual. The new lamp must be strictly identical to the one being replaced. The corresponding marking is located on the base or on the lamp bulb.

9. Do not touch bulbs of incandescent lamps with bare hands. When heated, the grease particles left by the fingers evaporate and settle on the reflector, causing it to tarnish.

10. After installing a new lamp, check its operation. If the lamp does not light, it may have been inserted badly or burned out again immediately. It is also possible that the electrical connector is poorly connected.

11. After replacing the front lamps, have the headlights adjusted by a workshop.

ATTENTION
The sequence of actions is important for your own safety. Failure to do so may result in an accident and injury.
Be careful not to damage body paintwork when removing and installing headlights and lamps.

  1. Open the tailgate.
  2. Open the drawer on the side of the luggage compartment.
  3. Using the Phillips screwdriver from the on-board tool kit, turn the lock (1) counterclockwise until it stops.
  4. Remove fixing screws (2).
  5. Carefully, moving backwards, remove the rear light from the body. At the same time, unlock and disconnect the electrical connector.
  6. Lay the tail light on a clean, level surface.
  7. To unlock the lamp socket, press the latches (1) in the direction indicated by the arrows in the figure.
  8. Remove the cartridge from the lamp.
  9. Replace the blown turn signal bulb (1), brake light or reversing light bulb (3) with an identical incandescent bulb.
  10. Insert the cartridge into the lantern. The latches should snap into place with characteristic clicks.
  11. Carefully insert the rear light into the hole in the body. At the same time, connect and fix the electrical connector.
  12. While holding the flashlight in place, hand tighten the mounting screws (2).
  13. Turn the lock (1) 90° clockwise.
  14. Close the box in the side of the luggage compartment.
  15. Close the tailgate.

REPLACING THE LICENSE PLATE LIGHT BULB

  1. Perform the checks/actions for all items above.
  2. Remove the screws securing the license plate light.
  3. Remove the bulb holder from the tailgate. The electrical connector does not need to be disconnected.
  4. Replace the burnt bulb with an identical replacement bulb.

TOWING RULESTowing requires some experience, especially when using a towline. Both drivers must be familiar with the driving habits of towing. Therefore, inexperienced drivers should not independently carry out towing.
While driving, make sure that there are no jerks and excessive cable tension. When towing on the side of the road, there is a danger of overloading the fasteners.
The included emergency light signaling does not interfere with showing the direction of turn. Push the direction indicator stalk in the desired direction. During the operation of the direction indicators, the emergency light signaling is turned off. As soon as the stalk is returned to the neutral position, the hazard warning lights will automatically turn on.

There are various options for the instrument cluster, so the display design and the type of information presented may vary. If the display of warning and information messages is not provided, then only warning lamps report violations in the operation of the car.
If there are several warning messages, the corresponding icons appear one after the other at intervals of a few seconds. These icons are displayed until the causes of their appearance are eliminated.MAINTENANCE INDICATORIndication of the need for the next maintenance is carried out on the display of the instrument cluster.
The service intervals for Volkswagen vehicles differ between service with engine oil change (eg service intervals) and without engine oil change (eg inspection service). The maintenance indicator only tells you when the engine oil needs to be changed. Information about the dates of other types of maintenance, for example, the date of the next inspection service or the period for changing the brake fluid, is indicated on a sticker on the car rack or in the service book.
For vehicles serviced by mileage or by time, fixed service intervals are set.
For vehicles with LongLife service, service intervals are determined on an individual basis. Technological progress has significantly reduced the frequency of car maintenance. With the introduction of the LongLife regulation, the Volkswagen Group is introducing a new maintenance technology in which the vehicle is serviced only when it is really needed. At the same time, the determination of the service interval (maximum two years) is carried out taking into account the specific operating conditions of the car and the characteristics of the driving style. The upcoming service reminder appears for the first time 20 days before the estimated service date. The indicated mileage to the next MOT is rounded up to a multiple of 100 km; the remaining time until the next MOT – up to the number of full days. The remaining interval until the next service can only be requested after driving 500 km since the previous service. Before that, only dashes appear on the index.REMINDER FOR UPCOMING MAINTENANCEWhen a service interval is nearing, a service reminder will appear on the display when the ignition is switched on.
In vehicles without the possibility of issuing text messages, an icon with the image of a wrench and the mileage in kilometers appear on the display of the instrument cluster. The specified value corresponds to the mileage that can be driven before the need for maintenance. After a few seconds, the image changes. A clock icon appears, indicating the number of days until the next service.
On vehicles with text messaging capability, the following message appears in the instrument cluster display: “Service in — km or — days”.MAINTENANCE DUE DATEWhen the service interval is due, an audible signal sounds when the ignition is switched on and a flashing wrench icon appears on the display for a few seconds.

3. Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation to the TDC of the first cylinder.
4. Unscrew the bolt securing the belt pulley. Hold belt pulley with locking tool -3415- and -3415/1-.

5. Unscrew the central bolt and remove the crankshaft belt pulley.
6. Unscrew inner part of puller -3203- three turns (approx. 5 mm) from outer part and secure with knurled screw.

7. Lubricate the threaded head of the puller with engine oil, install and, pressing hard, screw it as far as possible into the lip seal.
8. Loosen the knurled bolt and turn the inside of the puller against the crankshaft until the lip seal is pulled out.
9. Remove the support sleeve from the crankshaft journal and clean the mating surfaces of the crankshaft sprocket and support sleeve.INSTALLATIONNote
Check that there is no oil or grease left on the mating surfaces of the belt pulley, mounting bolt, support sleeve and crankshaft sprocket.

1. Push the support sleeve onto the crankshaft journal.
2. Place drift -T10117/2- on bushing and push lip seal onto bushing.
3. Remove drift -T10117/2- from bushing.

• The sealing flange with PTFE lip seal has a lip support ring. This support ring acts as a mounting sleeve, so it must not be removed before installation.
• Once removed from the packaging, the flange and sensor wheel must not be separated or rotated.
• The sensor wheel is brought into the installation position by locking onto the pin of the assembly tool -T10134-.
• The sealing flange and lip seal are one piece and can only be replaced together with the sensor wheel.
• The assembly tool -T10134- is positioned in the correct position in relation to the crankshaft by means of a guide pin which engages in the bore of the crankshaft.

5. Remove the protective clip -arrow- from the new flange.

6. The fixing hole -A- in the sensor wheel -C- must match the mark -B- on the flange.

7. Lay the flange face down on a clean, flat surface.8. Press the sealing lip support ring -A- downwards in the direction of the arrow until it rests on a level surface.

9. The top edge of the sensor wheel and the front edge of the flange must be on the same level -arrows-.

10. Place flange face down on assembly tool -T10134- so that locking pin -B- engages in hole -A- of sensor wheel.

Make sure that the flange rests on the mounting device.
11. While tightening the three knurled screws -A-, press the flange and the sealing lip support ring -B- onto the surface of the assembly tool -T10134- so that the locking pin cannot slip out of the hole in the sensor wheel.

2. Insert guide pin for petrol engines (red handle) -F- into the hole in the crankshaft. As a result, the encoder wheel is finally brought into the installation position.Note

3. Tighten both hexagon socket screws of the assembly tool by hand.4. The sensor wheel assumes an exact installation position on the crankshaft when there is a distance -a- of 0.5 mm between the crankshaft flange -A- and the sensor wheel -B-.

7. Attach a caliper to the crankshaft flange.8. Measure distance -a- between crankshaft flange and sensor wheel.• If the distance -a- is not sufficient: press the sensor wheel deeper.• When distance -a- has been reached: screw in new fixing screws for the sealing flange, alternating crosswise, with a torque of 15 Nm.

9. Fit engine speed sender -028–arrow- and tighten securing bolt to 5 Nm.

10. Install the oil pan.11. Install intermediate plate.12. Fasten the flywheel with new bolts. Tighten the fixing screws to 60 N.m and then tighten by 1/4 turn. (90°).F- SENSOR WHEEL PREPRESS1. Attach assembly tool -T10134- to crankshaft flange with hexagon socket screws -A-.

1. Tightening torque 50 N.m and tighten 1/4 turn (90°) to measure the crankshaft radial clearance, tighten to 50 N.m. Fall short. 2. Support cover. Do not interchange bearing caps (mark when removing). Support cover 3 with grooves for shims. The retaining lugs of the bearing shells in the cylinder block/support caps must lie on top of each other. 3. Crankshaft (axial play of the new crankshaft: 0.07 … 0.24 mm; limit tolerance: 0.26 mm). Measure the radial clearance with a calibrated Plastigage wire (new: 0.03…0.05 mm; limit tolerance: 0.13 mm). When measuring the radial clearance, do not overtighten the crankshaft. Removal from the crankshaft and pressing on the crankshaft of the needle bearing. 4. Sealing flange with sensor wheel and lip seal with engine speed sender -G28- (not illustrated). Tightening torque for engine speed sender -G28-: 5 Nm. The sealing flange must only be replaced complete with lip seal and sensor wheel. 5. Tightening torque 12 N.m. 6. Adjusting washers for the support cover 3. Observe correct fixation. 7. Bearing shell in the cylinder block. 8. Asterisk drive oil pump and timing chain. The mating surfaces must be free of oil and grease. 9.
