Services at Dubrovnik Airport

Despite the fact that Dubrovnik Airport is quite large, it does not have many services: there are three cafes, a compact duty-free store and a news kiosk. There are a couple of currency exchange offices, a bank and several ATMs. There is a luggage packing service and luggage storage.

There is no hotel at the airport itself, but you can stay overnight at one of the hotels in the village of Chilipi, some of which can be reached on foot in a few minutes.

You cannot stay in the complex at night; it is closed from 0:00 to 4:00.

The way to the resort with comfort and breeze

You can get from the airport to Dubrovnik either by public transport, or by taxi or transfer, along a winding serpentine road along the Adriatic coast. You can order a taxi or transfer upon arrival without leaving the airport. The cost of a taxi to the resort town will be approximately 35-38 €. To save 2-3 €, you can pre-order a taxi before arrival through the Kiwi taxi online service. Some taxi services charge an additional fee for large luggage up to 5€ and transportation on holidays and at night.

The transfer cost here is calculated based on:

  • arrival dates;
  • number of adults and children;
  • selected car brand;
  • a driver who speaks the tourist language;
  • destination.

You can rent a car at the airport rental services:

  • mini class costs 36€ or more;
  • medium model – from 90 €;
  • SUV – from 200 €;
  • executive – from 270 €.

The driver of a rented car also needs to consider fuel costs. The average price per liter of gasoline is from 1.25 €. The maximum speed in Croatian cities is 50 km/h, and on expressways it is 130 km/h.

You can get from the airport to the Dubrovnik bus station in 30 minutes by taking a direct Croatia Airlines bus, paying 6 €. They run more frequently during the day than in the evening and are directly dependent on flights. During rush hour there may be traffic jams and congestion on the road.

The Atlas Shuttle Bus runs from the airport to the central part of the city and back. It provides transportation in this direction for 9 € with only three transit stops. This transport does not operate according to schedule, so sometimes you have to wait for about an hour.

City buses No. 11, 27 and 38 run along the same route every 30-40 minutes. A one-way ticket costs 4 €.

Tax free at Dubrovnik airport

Those who make purchases in Croatia in the amount of 740 HRK and do not have EU citizenship can return the tax using the Tax free system. The rate is high: 25% on clothing, textiles, jewelry, glasses and alcohol, 13% or 5% on other categories of goods.

To obtain VAT, you must fill out a special form, export the purchase unused and packaged, and when crossing the border, put a stamp on the form from a customs officer. Since there are no Tax free return counters at Dubrovnik airport, upon returning home you need to send the stamped form by mail, the money will be returned to the card.

From Dubrovnik Airport to other cities in Croatia and Montenegro

To get from Dubrovnik Airport to other cities in Croatia and Montenegro, you will first need to get to the central bus station Gruž (Autobusni kolodvor Gruž). Domestic and international bus routes depart from this bus station daily. The main bus station in Dubrovnik is located in Gruž, 2 km from the Old Town. The station was recently built near the port. In the summer, tickets for popular routes sell out very quickly, so I advise you to purchase them in advance – at the bus station ticket office or on the Buscroatia.com website.

  • Bus station address in  Dubrovnik:  Obala pape Ivana Pavla II 44 A, 20000 Dubrovnik, Republika Hrvatska
  • Bus station opening hours:  24/7, 24/7 bus ticket sales
  • Bus station telephone:  +385 (0)20 356-004, +385 (0)60 305-070
  • The only official luggage storage in Dubrovnik is located at the Gruz bus station. Luggage storage is open from 05:30 to 22:30. The cost of storing luggage is 5 HRK (0.7 Euro) per suitcase
  • Hotels near the bus station:  Guest House Cesic from 34 Euro per double room per night, Apartments Dubčić from 47 Euro per double room per night

Rent a car at Dubrovnik Airport

Croatia is one of the most picturesque countries in southern Europe with colorful serpentines framed by mountains and sea. The main highway running along the Adriatic coast is the A1 highway. This highway is very easy to navigate and it is impossible to get lost. By car rented in Croatia, you can enter Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro without completing additional documents.

Please note that the speed limit in Croatian cities is 50 km/h, on expressways – 130 km/h. A rented car can be transported to the Croatian islands by ferry, but it cannot be taken with you to Italy, for example, on the popular route Dubrovnik – Bari. During the high season, it is simply unrealistic to book a car on site, so we advise everyone to book a rental car in advance.

Renting a car is suitable for independent travelers who want to visit the most secluded beaches and villages of Croatia. If you plan to vacation at a large Croatian resort and not travel anywhere outside of it, then you will not need a car – Croatia has a well-developed network of bus routes.

The car can be picked up either at Dubrovnik airport immediately after arrival, or at almost any popular resort in Croatia. You will enjoy traveling by car, you just need to understand a little about parking rules and local nuances.

Taxi at Dubrovnik airport

Some features of taxis in Croatia:

  • In taxis there is a surcharge for luggage (about 30 HRK – 5 Euro) and for trips on weekends and holidays.
  • Taxi ranks are located in certain places in Croatian cities: at airports, bus stations, in the port of Gruz in Dubrovnik, at the Pile gate, at the Ploce gate. Taxis do not stop here anyhow, but are taken only in designated places.
  • In Dubrovnik, taxis are prohibited from entering the Old Town, but they can take you to the gates.
  • Passengers are charged an additional fee for traveling on expressways.
  • Taxi drivers in Croatia love to profit from tourists and the trip can be very expensive.

If you are afraid that local taxi drivers will not understand you or will raise prices, I advise you to order a taxi transfer from a trusted company in advance on the Internet at a pre-known final price. After arrival, the driver will meet you and take you to your hotel anywhere in Croatia, be it the center of Dubrovnik or a resort town. A transfer will help you save a lot of precious rest time and energy, because in the summer in the heat with suitcases there is no pleasure in running around on public transport.
