Transportation of passenger cars in universal dry cargo containers is a convenient way of transporting them over long distances by rail or sea transport. Typically, a 20-foot container will carry one car, and a 40-foot container will carry two to four. The safety of such valuable cargo is ensured by compliance with the rules of loading it into a container, securing it, and transporting it.
STAGES OF PREPARING THE VEHICLE FOR TRANSPORTATION IN A UNIVERSAL MULTI-TURN CONTAINER
Before transporting the car in a dry cargo sea container, it must be properly prepared:
- Make sure that the car is clean and well dried. Wash and dry the wheels and tires.
- Check for leaks of brake or cooling fluid, oil.
- Adjust the pressure in the tires so that the spot of contact between the wheels and the floor is 130-150 mm2.
- Drain the fuel, disconnect the battery, disconnect the car alarm and the battery, turn off the anti-theft systems.
GENERAL RULES FOR VEHICLE TRANSPORTATION IN A SEA CONTAINER
The car, if it is in motion, drives into the module by itself. Loading a car with removed wheels or in a defective condition into a container is carried out by forklifts with extended forks.

- In the areas where the engine and bridges are located, protective material is laid and fixed on the floor. It is forbidden to install wheels on it.
- After loading the car into the container, put it on the handbrake and turn on first gear with a mechanical gearbox or park mode with an automatic gearbox.
- If cars are installed in two rows in height, then a flyover is mounted above the first row. The cars of the upper row are fixed with winches, which are fixed to the hub of the car and the ceiling of the module. To ensure reliable fixation, 4 winches are used at the same time. A sealant or soft mats are glued to the edge of the hood and roof.
- After fixing the machine, the metal module is closed and sealed. The number of the seal is indicated in the accompanying documents.
The consignor must be present when the vehicle is loaded, so he is notified in advance of the time and place of loading and unloading operations.
RULES FOR FIXING THE VEHICLE IN A DRY CONTAINER
In containers of 20 and 40 feet of reduced and standard height, the machine is fixed with two pairs of wire tensioners made of wire with a diameter of 6 mm, as well as with the help of longitudinal, transverse and rigid bars with a section of 100×120 mm. The bars can be stacked in height, and the longitudinal ones – in length, but there should be no more than two parts. Fastening of longitudinal bars along the length should be done outside the module so as not to damage the floor. Covering the car with boxes or personal items is prohibited, as they can rub off the paintwork while driving.
- One end of the stretch is fixed to the lower fastening devices of the metal module on the side walls of the end parts, and the other to the power elements of the vehicle.
- Two stubborn bars are placed along the end walls of the container. Their length should be equal to the width of the module.
- Two longitudinal beams are placed close to the wheels of the car. The length corresponds to the distance between the transverse bars. Between the tires and the longitudinal bars, it is recommended to place spacers designed to prevent the tires from wear.
- Transverse bars are placed on the longitudinal bars from the outside of the wheels and fixed on each side with two nails. Close to them, 4 bars are placed on the longitudinal bars, which are fixed with three nails.
Cross bars located on the side of the front door are installed only after loading the vehicle. The bars are hammered together with nails, the length of which is equal to the total thickness of the lumber being hammered.
The nails must not damage the floor of the metal module. It is strictly forbidden to hammer nails, staples or other fasteners into the floor of the container.
PREPARATION OF DOCUMENTS
An important role in preparing the car for shipment in a sea container is played by the correct preparation of the accompanying documentation. When carrying out export operations, fill out a bill of lading containing the following information:
- detailed car characteristics, including the weight of each car and VIN number;
- information about the consignor, consignee, freight carrier;
- numbers of metal modules;
- other additional information.
