It is not without reason that Switzerland is considered the main European center for active winter recreation. There are all the conditions for this – from wonderful nature to highly developed tourist infrastructure. More than 2/3 of the territory of the confederation is occupied by the high mountainous regions of the Alps, covered with snow most of the year.
Thanks to this, in Switzerland , already in the 19th century, ski resorts began to develop, which today have become a real standard for organizing winter recreation. The country has several separate zones, each of which has its own ski centers. Let’s take a closer look at all of them – geographical location, natural features, technical nuances, development of additional infrastructure.
Grindelwald
Grindelwald is a small mountain village in the canton of Bern, located at a kilometer altitude in the middle of the Alpine peaks. Because of this, the village is often called the “Village of Glaciers”. Despite its small size, Grindelwald has a very ancient history – it was first mentioned in chronicles in 1146. Grindelwald gained popularity as a resort town back in the 18th century. Initially, lovers of magnificent alpine landscapes and those wishing to improve their health with the help of healing mountain air came here. Since the second half of the 19th century, fans of mountaineering and rock climbing literally poured into Grindelwald, and since the beginning of the 20th century, this area has become a real Mecca for skiers from all over Europe. The first hotel opened here in 1888, and today the entire village lives solely on income from tourism.
Grindelwald is ready to provide vacationers with a wide range of services: there are dozens of hotels, individual chalets and hostels. The total area of the ski area exceeds 50 hectares, where there are several types of trails. The Slow Slope is located on Mount Mannlichen and is intended for beginners and amateurs with little experience – speeds exceeding 30 km/h are prohibited. And the “black” slopes of the Lauberhorn zone are intended for extreme skiers and top-class professionals: they host downhill world cups. Moreover, the longest of the local routes is 9 km long. It can be seen in the James Bond movie epic (the film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”), where the superhero rushes along it, escaping from his pursuers.
A single ski pass connects Grindelwald with four neighboring resort centers in the Jungfrau region. In addition to the ski slopes, the resort has 20 km of cross-country skiing, of which 1 km is illuminated for evening skiing. It hosts a speed race every year, in which everyone can take part. There are six toboggan trails in Grindelwald with a total length of about 60 km, and 80 km of hiking trails. For snowboarders, the resort has an extensive White Elements snow park with slides, rails and jumps for performing acrobatic moves. After playing sports, you can relax in one of the local nightclubs, visit a restaurant or bar.
