Highways in France
The amount of the toll in France depends on the category of the vehicle and the distance travelled. There is no general mileage tax as the motorway networks are operated by different companies and tolls vary significantly in some regions.
The most convenient fare can be found on the official website autoroutes.fr , where there is a toll calculator. You simply add the cities you will be passing through, the destination, and the vehicle category. The calculator calculates the exact amount of the fee.
Categories of vehicles in France
- Category 1
Cars and trailers weighing up to 3.5 tons and up to 2 meters high. These are cars and trailers. When entered into the calculator, this category is referred to as “Light Vehicles”. - Category 2
Vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons and a height of two to three meters. These are vans, trailers and caravans. - Category 3
Vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons and over 3 meters high. - Category 4
Trucks with more than two axles, weighing more than 3.5 tons and more than 3 meters high. - Category 5
This category includes motorcycles with sidecars.

The toll booths are labeled “Page”. The payment system may differ from one motorway to another, but usually you get a ticket at the turnstile at the entrance to the motorway and pay at the exit or at the end of the toll section.
Payment by cash or card
Cash payments can be made at turnstiles with a green arrow above them. You can pay in euros, pounds, Swiss francs or dollars. Turnstiles with a green arrow marked with a payment card accept CB, Visa, Eurocard Mastercard and Cofinoga cards. It is also possible to pay with the so-called refueling cards from EuroShell, Eurotrafic or DKV.
Automated passage Télépéage Liber-t
Télépéage Liber-t is an electronic fare collection system. Thanks to a device that attaches to the windshield of a car, motorway sections are recorded and billed once a month. At the Liber-t lane checkpoints, marked with an orange t, you do not need to stop while passing, it is enough to slow down to 30 km/h.

Eurotunnel by car
If you are planning a trip from France to England, the fastest way is to use the Eurotunnel. It is an approximately 50 km tunnel leading from Coquell near Calais, France to Folkestone, England. The journey takes about 35 minutes, the ticket price includes vehicles for up to nine passengers. The Eurotunnel terminal is located at exit 42 of the A16 motorway in France. The terminal in England can be reached from the M20 motorway at exit 11A. Speed limit in France
Recently, the speed outside the city has decreased to 80 km/h. This measure was introduced to reduce the number of accidents by improving safety. However, many French regions are now returning to the original maximum of 90 km/h outside the municipality.
Also pay attention to the speed limit in fog when the terrain (including motorways) is 50 km/h. During rain, the limit on motorways is automatically reduced from 130 to 110 km/h, in other directions separated by up to 100 km/h.

Road and motorway markings in France
Motorways are marked with the letter A (autoroute) and the road number, main roads – with the letter N (National). The roads corresponding to the roads of our area are marked with the letter D (Department).
In France, motorway directions are often indicated by a sign with an arrow and the motorway number. Only before leaving the highway give specific instructions.

How to avoid motorway tolls in France
Highway tolls can be avoided by using expressways, usually replicating motorways. The economic option is guaranteed to find the cheapest route other than toll motorways, i.e. free where possible.
In France, the regulations are strict, there is even a threat of imprisonment at high speed. Recently, outside the city, the speed limit was reduced to 80 km/h. They expect fewer accidents and more safety from this event.

Driving fines in France
For each offense, except for a financial fine and demerit points, there is a risk of losing your driver’s license for up to 3 years, depending on the severity of the offense. However, in practice these are rather extreme cases.
On the other hand, all fines for minor offenses are applied automatically, and if you are stopped by the police while committing an offense in France, it is fine to issue a fine on the spot. The police often allow the driver to withdraw money from the local ATM.
If the offense is caught on camera, the violator will be sent a written fine.

Tires
In October 2021, a regulation came into force in France regulating the obligation to equip vehicles with winter tires or, if necessary, snow chains. The obligation is valid in winter (from November 1 to March 31), including in some cities in mountainous regions.

The purpose of the new regulation is to improve road safety by reducing the risks associated with driving on snowy or icy roads.
In other regions, winter tires are mandatory during the winter months on roads covered with snow, ice or sleet.
Snow chains are required in areas where road signs are installed. Vehicle speed with anti-jump chains must not exceed 50 km/h.
Seat belts
The use of seat belts is mandatory in all seats.
Children in the car
Children under 10 years of age must be transported in a child car seat or a child seat designed for their weight and height, and only in the rear seats of the vehicle .
Children under the age of 10 are not allowed to ride in the front passenger seat. There is no upper limit for a child’s height.
Children can wear adult seat belts if the belt is passed over the shoulder and not over the neck.
Alcohol
The maximum amount of alcohol in the blood is 0.5 ppm, except for professional bus drivers, whose blood alcohol content must not exceed 0.2 ppm.
