The total length of the road network in the Republic of Macedonia is 374 kilometers. In 2020, the construction of the section from the Skopje ring road to the border with Kosovo will begin, and the highway from Trebenishta to Kafasan is also planned. After the completion of the current projects, we would have a strong road network compared to EU countries. The speed limit is 130 km/h, the signs have a green background, and the horizontal signaling has white lines. Tolls are charged at collection points 20-40 km away, and the price for passenger vehicles ranges from 30 to 80 den.

Information about toll roads in North Macedonia
The electronic toll collection system on Corridor 10 includes 7 toll stations located on one of the pan-European corridors – Corridor 10. The part of Corridor 10 that passes through the Republic of North Macedonia as a freeway starts in the north of the border with the Republic of Serbia and continues to the south to the border with the Republic of Greece. The electronic toll collection system on Corridor 10 is managed by the dispatch center in Petrovka.
Collection of road tolls (tolls) in the Republic of North Macedonia will be carried out through a combination of an open system and a closed toll collection system consisting of toll stations. The way of paying the fare can be:
in cash and bank cards (debit and credit),
in electronic form using contactless smart cards and using an electronic toll collection device
unpaid payment ticket with payment order
Legal entities and individuals can pay the toll by purchasing contactless smart cards or a device for electronic toll collection (tag). An electronic payment device allows you to pay without stopping, while with the help of contactless smart cards, payment is only possible by holding the card up to the reader. Currently, both payment methods are available at 5 (five) toll stations on Corridor 10: Romanivtsi, Petrovec, Sopot, Otovitsa and Gradsko.
Motorway A1 (North Macedonia)
“Druzhba” (designation: A1, formerly: M1), formerly “Alexander the Great” is a highway in North Macedonia that stretches in the north-south meridian direction, from the border with Serbia, at the Tabanovce border crossing to the village of the border with Greece at the border crossing Bogoroditsia – Machukovo (Evzoni), near Hevgelia. The highway is part of the pan-European international corridor 10, i.e. international highway E-75.
Motorway A 2 (North Macedonia)
Highway A2 (so-called “Mother Teresa”) is a national highway in the Republic of North Macedonia. It is part of the European road E65 and connects the cities of Skopje and Tetovo.
Motorway A3 (North Macedonia)
The A3 state road connects GP Delchevo (Border with Bulgaria) with GP Medzhitlia (Border with Greece, passes through Kočani, Shtip, Veles, Prilep and Bitola, from where a branch branches off and continues to Ohrid. As of 2021, the A3 is not a solution for highway, with the exception of the section from Tri Cesmi to Kadrifakovo, which is shared with A4. Motorway A4 (North Macedonia)
The A4 highway is one of the main roads in North Macedonia. It connects Kosovo with Skopje, Kumanovo, Petrovac, Shtip, Strumica and the Bulgarian border. Until September 30, 2011, the section Petrovec – Skopje – Kosovo had the name of the M3 highway.

Fines for drivers in North Macedonia
On the roads in the Republic of North Macedonia, it is mandatory to use headlights to illuminate the road both during the day and at night. Failure to comply with this legal provision is punishable by a fine of 15 euros (daytime) or 35 euros (nighttime).
Speed limits in North Macedonia
The driver is always obliged to adjust the speed in accordance with traffic conditions and road conditions. Speed limits on the roads of the Republic of North Macedonia are:
– 130 km/h on the highway
– 110 km/h on the highway
– 90 km/h on other roads
– The maximum permitted speed in the settlement is 50 km/h.
Failure to comply with this provision of the law is punishable by a fine of 10 to 400 euros, depending on the amount of the excess.
Towing a broken down vehicle in North Macedonia
Towing a broken-down vehicle on a public road must be carried out in the prescribed manner, i.e. by means of a cable, a rigid connection or with the support or load of the towing vehicle.
Failure to comply with this provision of the law is punishable by a fine of 45 euros.
It is prohibited to tow a defective vehicle on the highway and on roads designated for motor vehicle traffic, if the failure occurred on that road. However, towing will only be done to the first exception of a highway or road intended for motor vehicle traffic.
The vehicle towing the defective vehicle must not drive at a speed of more than 40 km/h.
Seat belt use in North Macedonia
In the Republic of North Macedonia, the use of a seat belt in a vehicle is mandatory not only for the driver, but also for the persons transported in the vehicle. The use of seat belts is mandatory for passengers in all seats that are equipped with a seat belt.
Failure to comply with this legal obligation is subject to a fine of 40 euros for the driver, i.e. 50 euros for persons transported in the vehicle.
Drinking and driving in North Macedonia
The permissible amount of alcohol in the blood of drivers is 0.5 ppm. For professional drivers and novice drivers, the blood alcohol level (0.0 ppm) is not allowed.
The fine for failure to comply with this legal obligation ranges from 225 to 375 euros.
It is forbidden to transport children under 12 years of age and persons under the influence of alcohol on the front seat of the car.
