Road tax in Croatia: everything you need to know before you travel

Croatia is a popular tourist destination, and its  highway network  provides quick and safe access to different parts of the country. However, drivers in Croatia should be familiar with  the toll system  , as many roads in Croatia have tolls. In this article, we will tell you in detail how  road tolls work in Croatia  , what the prices are, how you can pay them, and also share useful tips for drivers.

How does the toll system work in Croatia?

Croatia uses a toll system based on the number of kilometers driven. When entering the toll road, drivers receive  a card  at the toll station. At the exit from the track, a card is issued, and the fare is calculated depending on the length of the section covered.

The fare depends on several factors, including:

  • The length of the section  you are driving on.
  • Vehicle category  (for example, cars, trucks, motorcycles).

Fares

The toll in Croatia depends on the section of the motorway. The most frequently used motorways in Croatia are:

  • A1  (Zagreb – Split – Dubrovnik), which is known as “Dalmatia”.
  • A3  (Bregana – Zagreb – Lipovac), which leads east and connects Croatia with Hungary and Serbia.
  • A6  (Zagreb – Rijeka), which is crucial for access to the Adriatic.

Fare payment methods

You can pay road tolls in Croatia in several different ways, depending on your preferences and capabilities:

Cash

Many drivers still use  cash  to pay for their fares. You can pay in euros at toll booths.

Cards

Paying  by credit or debit card  is convenient and common. The most commonly accepted cards are Visa, MasterCard and Maestro.

ENC Device (Electronic Toll Collection)

For those who often drive on highways,  the ENC device  is the best choice. This device enables electronic toll collection without stopping at toll stations. ENK users have the opportunity to pass through special ENK lanes, which significantly reduces waiting time.

ENC also offers  discounts  of 20% to 30% on certain promotions, depending on the package you choose. You can buy an ENC device at toll booths or online, and the device simply mounts on your car’s windshield.

Vehicle categories for toll collection

Vehicles in Croatia are classified into several categories for charging:

  • Category IA : Motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles
  • Category I  : Motorcycles and passenger cars (height up to 1.9 meters).
  • Category II  : Cars with trailers and smaller delivery vehicles.
  • Category III  : Trucks and buses with two axles.
  • Category IV  : Trucks and buses with more than two axles.

Where are the toll stations in Croatia?

Toll collection stations are located at highway entrances and exits. It is important to note that some of the key toll stations are:

  • Luchko (Zagreb)  : the main toll station at the entrance to the A1 motorway to the south.
  • Bregana  : the border crossing with Slovenia and the beginning of the A3 motorway.

Penalties for duty evasion

Failure to pay customs duties in Croatia can result in high fines. If you drive in an ENC lane without an ENC device or if you don’t pay the toll, you will face a fine and in some cases additional toll charges.

Tips for drivers on Croatian roads

  • Use ENC  : If you travel a lot on motorways, ENC is practical and saves time. ENC users can also get discounts on travel.
  • Prepare cash or card  : Some collection points can be crowded, so prepare a means of payment in advance to speed up the process.
  • Avoid rush hour  : Traveling at weekends or during the summer holiday season can result in longer waits at toll booths, especially on stretches towards the sea.

Using  the motorways in Croatia  provides a fast and safe way to get around, but it’s important to understand the  toll system  to avoid unexpected costs or fines. Whether you’re paying by cash, card or using an ENC device, getting information about prices and payment options will help you have a pleasant and worry-free trip.
