How to buy a used car in Italy
After you have found the right car, all that remains is to process the purchase with the transfer of ownership, verify the transfer of ownership of the car and update the documents for the car. In this case, you must have your identity card, tax code and a tax stamp worth €14.62 with you. At this stage, simply contact the Public Vehicle Register (PRA), vehicle registration agency or your local Civil Motorisation office.
Here you need to fill out a form for the transfer of ownership and another for updating documents for the car, then the seller and the buyer must sign both forms and within a few days the deal is concluded. After paying for the vehicle, the buyer receives a certificate of ownership, although to date a single document of ownership and DUS (Documento Unico di circolazione e di proprietà) is issued.
Within 60 days, you must register the transfer of ownership by contacting the STA, Motorization Authority or (PRA). The cost of the operation depends on the type of vehicle and the province of residence, aspects that affect the amount of IPT, provincial transcription tax. In addition to the IPT, you must pay an ACI fee of €27, a DT fee of €10.20 and a stamp duty of €48, with costs of at least €225.
How to buy a used car in Italy and deregister it and take it out of Italy
In cases of selling a car abroad, or for permanent residence in another country, you need to deregister the car for export to another country.
Regarding the procedure, it is necessary to contact the STA ACI (Automotive Club of Italy) directly. At the end of the process, a radiation certificate will be issued, also available in digital format. You can access it with a special code that will be given to you at the end of the procedure.
From January 1, 2020, unlike before, a certificate can only be issued if the car has passed a positive MOT no more than 6 months before the request for cancellation.
Therefore, if you want to continue the deregistration of your car for export, we advise you to check the date of the last technical inspection in time. If it was earlier than the expected 6 months, even by a few days, you will have to do it again.
Who can deregister a car in Italy for sale abroad?
The person who has the right can be:
- car owner
- a beneficiary not yet determined by the PRA
In the second case, it can be an heir who has not yet completed the process of accepting the inheritance, or the buyer himself, who will have to present the deed of sale at the time of the request.
Deregistration of an impounded car in Italy: is it possible?
If the car is subject to administrative seizure, it can be taken to another country only after the debt is paid off .
Even in the case of a mortgage or foreclosure, a deed with the creditor’s consent must be attached to the cancellation itself.
In case of uncertainty, we still advise you to request a PRA check to find out the legal status of the car and whether this allows it to be transferred to another country.
