You will need a vignette for vehicles weighing less than 3,500 kg to drive on the motorways in Austria. It is best to buy a digital vignette. This vignette is valid immediately and will be automatically linked to your registration number. No need to attach a physical vignette to the windshield anymore. You don’t need to pay extra for trailers and caravans. For vehicles whose weight exceeds 3500 kg, it is necessary to use the so-called toll box (Go-box). You can choose a 1-day, 10-day, 2-month or one-year vignette.

Overview of the most important points:

1. The vignette is required for all motorways in Austria.
2. The vignette is required for vehicles whose weight does not exceed 3500 kg.
3. A separate vignette is not required for trailers and caravans.
4. A physical adhesive vignette is no longer required.
5. The digital vignette is valid immediately.
6. Additional fees must be paid for the main tunnels.
7. This is checked by the automatic camera system.
8. For vehicles weighing more than 3,500 kg, tolls must be paid via Go-box.
9. You can order a vignette for 10 days, two months or one year.
10. One-day vignette will be available from 2024.

Sticker or digital vignette for Austria?

The adhesive or sticky sticker that was used as a vignette in previous years and had to be stuck behind the windshield is almost a thing of the past. And also the fines the Dutch received for not sticking the Austrian vignette outside the window according to the rules. These vignettes still exist, but since the introduction of the digital road vignette, they are used less and less.

How does the digital vignette work for Austria?

After the introduction of the online vignette in 2018, your number plate will be registered in the Austrian database Asfinag (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen Finanzierungs- Aktiengesellschaft). Since 1982, this Austrian toll administrator has been responsible for registering your license plates and issuing digital vignettes. When you cross the border from Germany into Austria, your number plate is scanned by a camera system, your number plate is compared to a database and checked to see if you have complied with the vignette requirement. Once you have applied for a vignette, it cannot be transferred to another license plate.

How long is the digital vignette valid for the freeway?

There are four digital road vignettes to choose from in Austria:

The vignette requirement applies to roads marked in orange. Parts highlighted in green are subject to a special fee. No vignette is needed here. However, to get to these toll roads, you drive on motorways that require a vignette.

Digital route fee

There are also roads for which you need to pay extra. The vignette for Austria is not valid here. These are roads with a lot of tunnels, which means that these roads have high maintenance costs. These costs are reimbursed from the motorist who uses these roads. You can submit an application for payment of duty in the same way as for a vignette. These 6 so-called “Sondermautstrecken”:

Tyrol: prohibition of driving on shortcuts

The last point in this section is that during the summer months in the land of Tyrol it is forbidden to leave the toll road on weekends and drive through Austria via mountain passes and cuts. This ban applies to cars, trucks and motorcycles. The authorities consider it necessary to protect their residents from excessive traffic and thus prevent major traffic jams.

Additional rules apply to a number of mountain passes. You can buy mountain pass tolls at toll booths.
