The rules for driving motorcycles in Montenegro do not differ much from the general European rules, but there are still some peculiarities here. The local traffic police especially closely monitor the observance of traffic rules by bikers and willingly issue fines for their violation, so it is worth studying the rules even before traveling on Montenegrin roads.
What licenses are required to drive a motorcycle in Montenegro
For trips in Montenegro on a rented motorcycle, a driver’s license of your country is sufficient, if it is duplicated in Latin. An international driver’s license is not required.
Classification of vehicles in Montenegro
- A moped is a two-wheeled motor vehicle, the maximum speed of which does not exceed 45 km/h. At the same time, the volume of the internal combustion engine should not exceed 50 cubic meters. cm, the power of the electric motor can be more than 4 kW.
- A motorcycle is a motor vehicle, the maximum speed of which exceeds 45 km/h, the volume of the internal combustion engine exceeds 50 cubic meters. cm or the maximum power of the electric motor is more than 4 kW.
- A light quad bike is a four-wheel vehicle weighing up to 350 kg, excluding batteries. The maximum speed is up to 45 km/h, the volume/power of the engine is less than 50 cubic meters. cm or less than 4 kW.
- A heavy ATV is a four-wheeled vehicle, other than a light ATV, with a mass of up to 400 kg if the vehicle is intended for the transport of passengers, or 550 kg if the vehicle is intended for the transportation of goods. The mass of batteries is not taken into account. The maximum power is 15 kW.
Categories of driving license in Montenegro
- AM, A or B is a moped.
- A1 – a motorcycle with an engine capacity of less than 125 cubic meters. cm and capacity up to 11 kW.
- A2 – motorcycle, the power of which engine does not exceed 35 kW.
- A is a motorcycle with a power of 35 kW or more.
- B1, B – quad bike.
Peculiarities of traffic rules and fines for their violation
- A helmet is mandatory for both the driver and the passenger. Riding with an unfastened helmet is prohibited. The fine is 60-150 euros.
- You can move at a speed of no more than 50 km/h in the populated area, up to 80 km/h outside the populated area. The excess will cost €30-2000.
- Using a phone or headphones in both ears while driving is prohibited – €60-150.
- Pedestrians must be allowed to pass at crosswalks. Penalty for €100-450.
- If there are two or more motorcycles or mopeds on the road, they must move one after the other – €40-100.
- The driver is forbidden to release the steering wheel from his hands, remove his feet from the pedals, hold on to another vehicle – €70-200.
- It is forbidden to transport a child under 12 years old on a moped, motorcycle or quad bike – €60-150.
- It is forbidden to transport a person who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs – €70-200.
- If there is a bicycle lane on the road, the moped driver must move along it. Fine – €40-100.
Fines in Montenegro differ significantly. The maximum amount is issued to those who repeatedly violate, greatly exceeded or “do not admit guilt”, that is, speak rudely to the police officer, curse or threaten.
Be friendly and calm when dealing with the police. If you know a few phrases in Montenegrin, use them.
Most often, bikers are stopped to check the presence of the appropriate category of rights and documents on the vehicle. If the bike is rented, the contract must be with you.
