The international airport of the Montenegrin resort of Tivat is 4 km from the city center.

Airplanes arrive in small, but interesting for tourists, Montenegro all year round, but the main peak of airport traffic is in the “high” season – in the summer, when the Adriatic Sea is warm. From here it is very convenient to reach any resort in the country.

Arrival: customs clearance time and luggage waiting time at Tivat airport

Tivat Airport accepts planes only during the day. This is due to its location – there are mountains nearby, and planes land as if in a pit. The view of the mountains and the Bay of Boka Kotor is very impressive. By the way, you can take pictures.

“Adriatic Air Gate” is a small terminal with 11 check-in counters. There is also an information desk, luggage packaging and the office of Montenegro airlines.

In December 2018, the official opening of the second terminal took place. It works only in summer, during the influx of tourists.

Passengers walk from the plane to the airport building, so take this into account when packing hand luggage.

Check-in after arrival is usually quick. The time it takes to pass border control depends on how many flights there are at the moment. In the “peak” it can take up to an hour.

Passengers of each flight are invited to the control in turn, so there is no rush.

If it is not particularly busy, then when you pass passport control, your luggage will already be waiting for you on the issuance belt. There are no special people in Tivat who must monitor whether you have taken your suitcase or not. As, after all, in most EU countries. Waiting for luggage takes from 10 to 40 minutes.

If your suitcase is lost, contact the lost and found office, phone: +382 (0) 32670913.

Wi-Fi at Tivat Airport

Wi-Fi is available in the waiting room. Password is not required. True, the speed is not very high (128 kb/s), but you can check mail, send messages and read news.

SIM cards are sold at the airport at specialized counters.

How to get from Tivat airport to the nearest resorts

You can get to the necessary resort by bus, taxi or rented car.

Bus from Tivat airport

You will not see a bus stop near the airport, and this can be confusing. You will find the stop approximately 200 meters from the “Adriatic Way”.

It will not be difficult to overcome this distance easily, but it will be difficult with suitcases – all local sidewalks are covered in potholes and pits.

The bus stop that goes to Budva, Pidgorica, Kotor, Bar, Ulcinj is the one closest to the airport. To Tivat, Herceg-Novi, Perast – across the road.

Buses run without a clear schedule, so you will just have to wait until the appropriate one arrives.

A ticket to Tivat costs about 2-3 euros, to Budva – 5-7. Baggage needs to be paid separately – 1-2 euros. If you are traveling with two or three people and with luggage, it is better to order a taxi or rent a car. Overpay 5-10 euros, but you will get there quickly and comfortably.

Taxi from Tivat airport

“Catch” taxi drivers at the airport is not a good idea, then you can overpay by one and a half or two times. It is more profitable to order a taxi in advance online.

Driving time by taxi or car to Tivat – 10 minutes, Budva – 25, Jaka – 20 minutes, Pidgorica – 1 hour 10 minutes, Bar – 50 minutes, Herceg Novi – 45.

Car rental at Tivat airport

For those who drive, the most convenient and easiest way to organize your transfer is to rent a car.

If you reserve a car with delivery to the airport in advance, it will be waiting for you in the parking lot upon arrival. All you have to do is sign the contract, pay the balance and get behind the wheel. All formalities take 20 minutes!

When choosing a car, be sure to consider:

  • the size of the trunk and the amount of luggage. In compact cars, trunks accommodate 1, in the best case – 2 suitcases;
  • availability of air conditioning. If you travel in the summer, it is simply necessary;
  • Engine capacity. If you plan to go to the mountains, it is better to choose a car with increased power (1.4 l – for mechanics and 1.6 l – for automatic);
  • children under 5 years old can be transported to Montenegro only with the help of special restraint devices;
  • a green card must be issued to travel abroad. If you are planning a trip to neighboring countries, choose a car with this option.

Parking at Tivat airport

Although it is a small airport, there is no such luxury as free parking here. The only paid parking is located in front of the house.

The price of parking is €0.80 per hour. This is standard for Montenegro “parking with a barrier” with payment to the operator.

Routes E65 and E80 can be used to reach most of the country’s cities.

Departure from Tivat airport

Flight check-in starts in 3 hours and ends in 40 minutes. To save time and nerves, it is possible to register online. It must be completed at least 24 hours before the start of check-in for the flight. This is a free service.

If you used online check-in, it is enough to show your passport at the check-in desk for boarding.

Baggage packing in the terminal costs €7, and in the parking lot near LifeStyle Caffe – €4.

Fast Track  is not available at Tivat Airport. Although there are sites on the Internet that offer such a service. But this is only VIP service. Passport control and baggage collection will have to be done in the hall.

Waiting rooms at Tivat airport

The general hall  is quite sufficient for the winter period and very small for the “high season”. When planes take off and land one after the other, and also delay flights, there are not enough seats in the hall.

However,  there is a VIP hall  . It is located near passport control, on the right. The hall itself is small, about 25 people. Seats are soft chairs. There is food and drinks, incl. alcohol. There is Wi-Fi.

Entering the VIP lounge makes sense if you are a business class passenger or have other rights to free lounge access because you have special needs. there is only one advantage over the general hall here – food and drinks, there is no other luxury, and paying the sum of 50 euros does not make much sense.

Cafes, shops, duty-free at Tivat airport

In  the common area  there is a “Caffe Negro” where you can order coffee, tea and snacks. The cafe is inexpensive, but since the airport itself is small (it was built as a military airfield, and the dimensions are appropriate), it is completely crowded in the summer. The cafe is open until the last flight. The service staff is praised.

In the northern part of the airport is the Tobacco Shop – confectionery, perfume, newspapers. You can pay your mobile phone bill.

 There is a Regul Impex GH store in the  duty-free zone. It is located immediately after the passport control. It is small in size and organized as a self-service store.

Here you can buy: cosmetics and perfumes, cigarettes, alcoholic products, candies and chocolate, some food, toys and souvenirs. The latter, however, according to the unanimous opinion of tourists, are 2 times more expensive than the same in the city. And the prices for the rest of the goods are adequate, although they cannot be called cheap.

You can have a full meal before departure only before passing passport control. After – only chocolates, chips and, at best, a duty-free sandwich.

ATMs  : two, located in the common area.

Mother and child’s room  : there are three of them. In the general area, international departures area and domestic departures area.

Rules of import and export to Montenegro

The customs requirements of Montenegro are simple, clear and comfortable for tourists. Travelers who do not carry dutiable items pass through the “green” corridor. Random check can be here.

Those who have such things go along the “red” corridor. If you are in doubt about your luggage, it is better to use “red” because the customs fines are quite serious.

You can import into the country:

  • 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 100 cigarillos or 250 gr. tobacco;
  • 1 liter of strong alcoholic beverages and 2 liters of wine;
  • baby food – 1 kg;
  • feed for a pet – 1 kg;
  • vegetables (fresh) – up to 5 kg.

Any products of animal origin without a vet control certificate are prohibited for import into Montenegro. Eggs, lard, meat and milk cannot be imported without certificates.

Tobacco and alcohol can be transported only by persons over 18 years of age.

The following cannot be exported from Montenegro: tobacco, alcohol and perfumes in commercial quantities, i.e. exceeding reasonable personal needs. There are no special restrictions on the export of goods. You need to follow the rules of the country where you are going to fly.
